Green Index - Canada's Directory of Green Businesses

Thinking green is on the rise

The myth of having to put either the economy or the environment first is slowly being eroded.

In order to grow and expand as an economy Nova Scotia needs to keep developing new environmental technology and come up with innovative ways to deal with existing problems. In order to do that, however, the old adage that the environment and industry are mutually exclusive needs to be overcome, said Parent to the assembled crowd.

Please Stop Using Our Name Inappropriately

Green Shift Inc. (web site., listing) has filed suit against Liberal Party because of their use of the term Green Shift in their policies.

Green Shift Inc. has launched a suit against the Liberal Party of Canada and the Federal Liberal Agency of Canada, objecting to their use of our company’s trade mark, “Green Shift”, in association with their environmental tax program…on the basis that it is causing confusion and damaging our company’s reputation.

I’m not sure about this. The Green Party has been using Green Tax Shift for a long time and Green Shift seems like pretty common term in environmental circles.

Sweden Rolling Out 183 MPH High-Speed Green Train

While Bombardier may not meet the requirements to list in the GreenIndex, they are testing a high-speed “Green Train” in Sweden:

“The Green Train, or Gröna Tåget, will cut energy use on rail lines by 30 percent through lowered operational costs and journey times. Top speeds reached 183 MPH on a test run.”

So, how’s that Windsor to Montreal high-speed corridor coming along, hmmm?

Transport Canada Approves Zero Emissions Low-Speed Trucks

“With an updated federal definition of low-speed vehicles (LSVs), manufacturers of small LSV trucks can now begin to market them across Canada, announced the Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities today. These low-speed trucks are designed for use such as grounds keeping, landscaping, and in certain industrial and institutional settings such as campuses and resorts, where they can be operated safely.”

This does not mean that the vehicles are allowed on public roads though but hey, we’ll take what we can get. The folks at Zenn Motors are no doubt quite happy with this decision in spite of that.

Air Canada Introduces Carbon Offsets for Business Travelers

From the site:

“Up to now, passenger offsets on Air Canada have financed a forestry project. But going forward, the airline’s corporate clients will be able to pick from a range of Canadian-based carbon mitigation plans to match their environmental goals.”

Great news for business travelers looking to cut their carbon footprint.

Canada plant to make ethanol from garbage

Greenfield Ethanol is the company running this project.
