Green Index - Canada's Directory of Green Businesses

I was hoping to keep this space for Canadian green business news but stories seem to be drying up. Anyone have any suggestions where to look?

Do What You Can

Wondering where you can take all those hazardous chemicals and waste you have lying around the house? Most folks haven’t a clue what to do with them so I wouldn’t be surprised if these materials wound up where they don’t belong: in the landfill.

Do What You Can makes it easy to find out how to get rid of the dangerous stuff.

Green building has shifted into the mainstream, ACEC president says

Green building is becoming the norm? Fantastic news. Seems the tipping point may have been reached. Of course, the folks that built their business around green building will lose some marketing advantage but onward, upward, right?

TransCanada says power line moving forward

TransCanada is well-known for it’s pipelines but in this case, it’s setting up some power lines and is looking for a wind energy provider to fill half of the transmission line’s capacity (1500 megawatts). Good on them.

Batteries are seen as key to future of electric vehicle market

This is a pretty straightforward article about the importance of batteries in vehicles as we move away from fossil fuels. Aurora, Ontario-based parts supplier gets a nod toward the end as the developer of Ford’s battery.

Green your Business: Toolkit for Tourism Operators

Nice little gift from the government for tourism operators. The guide will show how tourism operators can reduce operating costs and attract enviro-aware clients.

Civic passes Ford’s F-150 in sales

Well that’s a nice little bit of news from the automotive front. The Civic is now the number 1 seller in Canada, dethroning the Ford F-150. My personal opinion is that most trucks are sold to wannabes that wouldn’t dream of dirtying their trucks doing actual work that requires a pick up truck. It’s an image thing. I fully support business and contractors that actually need and use trucks to do their jobs.

Steve Rayner - The Climate Change Challenge

Interesting interview about the role of business in reducing carbon emissions.

ExpoCam truck show goes green

If you’re a trucker or own a trucking company looking to keep costs down, ExpoCam might have some green tips for you.

Chafing-dish fuel creates hot-button green issue

Nu-Lite Inc. (website, listing) got a nice little write up in the Edmonton Journal.

Fido Pushes Online Billing

Here’s the line: “It’ll not only help save forests, it’ll save you money too.” Now, this is a little greenwashing here. I believe that the profit motive is one of the best ways to get companies and individuals to go green. In this case, Fido fails to mention that online billing saves them money. A significant amount of money, I’d bet, when you factor in postage, paper, envelopes, and processing overhead.

Large Canadian School District Goes Green

The Kawartha Pine Ridge School District School Board has chosen Enviro-Solutions (website, listing) to supply green cleaning systems and products.

Greenest restaurant in Canada

The Fall River Pub and Grill (web site, listing) has been identified as Canada’s greenest restaurant. Might be worth a stop if I take 7 on my next trip to Ottawa.

BC Architect Teresa Coady wins Canada’s top business award for female entrepreneurs

No surprises here, I guess considering the volume of green work they do.
