Green Index - Canada's Directory of Green Businesses

The extra cost of buying a hybrid

Hybrids get knocked on their higher prices. Of course, if you’re running a Canadian Green Business, there’s the added marketing value of driving a hybrid. For plain old consumers, though, the math doesn’t really add up. You’re paying for something more than just the car when you buy a hybrid. It’s up to the buyer to decide if the knowledge of going green is worth the additional cost.

VIA receives first environmentally enhanced F-40 locomotive from CAD Railway Industries

Yay! Trains are good an green. Green trains are even better. Think about using Via for your next Canadian Green Business trip.

Canadian ‘green’ choices found lacking

If you think you’re green, you probably aren’t. But hey! Keep trying. Best place to start? Right here. Search for a Canadian Green Business to help you on your way.

Yeeeeee ha!

Nice look at how summer festivals are going green. Most of the work is obviously in the background so folks don’t even know it.

Canada startup aims to smoke asphalt shingles

I wish this company had a web site but it seems to be in some sort of stealth mode or something. I love the idea of converting current surfaces into green use and Tectusol’s roof conversion fits the bill perfectly.

Swapping old cars for new is something that’s been getting a lot of press these days but I think swapping your car for a bike makes more sense. The folks at Retire Your Ride seem to agree and you can get up to $490 off a nice commuter bicycle if you turn in your old car.

Canadian Solar Announces 120MW of Recent Sales Orders

Canadian Solar (web site, listing) seems to be weathering the downturn just fine, thank you very much!

Green pitch ironic after railways shut lines

A green (as in environment) solution (shipping goods by rail) is catching the attention of politicians wanting to go green (as in money). After more or less gutting rail lines, their seems to be more attention paid to the value rails offer over trucking.

RONA Donates $750,000 to the Centre for Sustainable Development

RONA is kicking in a good sum of money for an organization aiming at building an ecological demonstration building in downtown Montreal. Good on them. Particularly with the economy the way it is and reno centres taking a hit with the housing downturn

BioteQ Named One of Canada’s Top 50 Most Socially Responsible Corporations

BioteQ (web site, listing) managed another award by landing in the Top 50 Most Socially Responsible Corporations listing. I’d link to the article but the Maclean’s site seems to be more than slightly confused.

Media Conference - Official Launch of Bikes + Transit

Today’s the media conference for Toronto’s Bikes + Transit web site. The site aims to show how bikes mesh with transit options in the GTA. This site will give folks an idea of exactly how far they can go with their bikes if they use the transit system.

Canada Greens Our Roads with Electric Vehicles

We get a lot of knocks for our emissions (and rightly so, in many ways) but Jean Baudry makes the case that we’re make gains in helping consumers buy green products and turn Canadian companies green.

The Globe and Mail Implements Environmental Paper Procurement Policy

Like most people, I rarely buy newspapers but I do make a point of getting the Globe and Mail on the weekend. There’s actually time to sit down and read and enjoy the paper. But while this might be a nice gesture, doesn’t online delivery kill absolutely zero trees? Yes, there’s the electrical cost but not trees would be killed if newspapers simply gave up on the print edition. Not going to happen soon, I know but with things like the Kindle in the market, I can see it happening eventually.

Will Canada Post Deliver the Electric Car?

Who says bureaucrats can’t get it right? Right eventually, anyway considering Canada Post has been working on greening their fleet for a long time. Anyway, technology finally seems to be catching up with ambition. So, the question: Would you switch your Canadian Green Company shipping provider from FedEx/UPS/DHL to Canada Post if they had a completely green fleet?

New careers emerge from going green

I never get tired of reading about the benefits of becoming a Canadian Green Business or (or at least a greener business).

Green Building: Making old buildings new again

Yes, that makes sense. With the rush to replace old things with new, environmentally friendly ones, many overlook the fact that building from scratch exacts a huge environmental toll.
